TRADITIONAL STYLE PRO STREET vs. MODERN PRO STREET
IPSA CLARIFICATION
The International Pro Street Association (IPSA) recognizes that Pro Street has evolved over time while maintaining a consistent core identity rooted in drag-racing aesthetics and street legality. IPSA acknowledges two legitimate expressions of pro street: Traditional Style Pro Street and Modern Pro Street.
TRADITIONAL STYLE PRO STREET
Early Pro Street

Traditional style pro street vehicles adhere closely to the foundational visual language of professional drag racing as it has evolved over time. These builds emphasize the classic Pro Street stance, proportions, and presentation, while allowing for reasonable performance, safety, and braking improvements consistent with advancements in drag racing technology.

Typical characteristics may include:

  • Prominent superchargers, turbochargers, mechanical or electronic fuel injection, or carbureted systems either protruding from the hood or tucked under scoops
  • Smaller wheel diameters paired with large sidewall rear tires
  • Narrowed rear axles with large wheel tubs
  • Improved brakes, suspension, and safety components that enhance performance without altering the traditional Pro Street appearance
MODERN PRO STREET
Modern Pro Street

Modern Pro Street vehicles represent a contemporary interpretation of the Pro Street style, incorporating modern engineering, materials, and design trends while maintaining a clear drag-race influence.

A key distinguishing characteristic of Modern Pro Street is the shift from smaller wheel diameters and large sidewall tires to larger diameter wheels paired with lower-profile tires.

  • Electronic fuel injection and modern engine management systems
  • Modern or updated powerplants
  • Advanced chassis, suspension, and braking systems
  • Larger-diameter wheels with lower-profile tires
  • Enhanced safety, drivability, and performance features

Modern Pro Street builds may prioritize performance, refinement, and technology, but must represent the aggressive stance and drag-racing inspired presence fundamental to Pro Street without limiting innovation.

UNIFIED PRO STREET STANDARD

Regardless of style, all IPSA-recognized Pro Street vehicles must:

  • Be licensed, registered, and insured for street use
  • Exhibit professional drag-racing visual influence
  • Maintain dominant rear tire presence and aggressive stance
  • Adhere to IPSA classification standards

This distinction allows IPSA to honor Pro Street's roots while recognizing its continued evolution and preserving its identity without limiting innovation.
